135 Years in the Heart of Prague

Výstaviště was built in 1891 for the General Land Centennial Exhibition and has since remained one of the most prominent leisure and event complexes in Prague. Having survived floods, fires, and the city’s transformations, it has undergone extensive revitalization over the past few years. Today, it stands as a vibrant hub for both visitors and event organizers.

    1891

    The General Land Centennial Exhibition

To host the General Land Centennial Exhibition, a brand-new complex spanning 154,000 sqm was created within part of Královská obora (today´s Stromovka Park). Within just a single year, both temporary and permanent exhibition pavilions and palaces were constructed. The exhibition, which filled the Czechs with well-deserved pride, showcased the resilience, perseverance, and skills of the Czech people. Running from May 15 to October 18, 1891, it attracted over 2.4 million visitors.

  • 1991

    The General Czechoslovak Exhibition

The General Czechoslovak Exhibition took place from May 15 to October 28, 1991, exactly 100 years after the Centennial Exhibition. Its goal was to demonstrate that Czechoslovakia still had plenty to offer to the world. Although attendance reached 2.5 million visitors, the event ended in massive debt for the organizer. Consequently, the management of the Grounds was taken over by the Slovak company Incheba.

The Expansion and Growth of the Grounds

On January 1, 1. the complex was taken over by the municipal joint-stock company Rozvojové projekty Praha, known today as Výstaviště Praha, a.s. This marked the beginning of an era of major investments and extensive revitalization. Among the first projects launched by the new management was a complete overhaul of the utility networks. Since then, the grounds have been flourishing, with buildings being meticulously renovated one by one.

  • Today
